xpointer library licensing

Description

Current plan is to use modify the xpointer library here:

http://www.cs.unibo.it/projects/xslt%2B%2B/

but it is currently licensed under GPL. Must see if we can get it relicensed under an alternative model, especially if Topaz makes significant changes and gives those back to the developer. Change might include bug fixes (support empty string argument on string ranges), using the latest jdk, using latest xalan and other associated libraries, etc.

Accepted. Am sending email to developers to see whether they will like the idea.

I have sent an email to Fabio Vitali and Claudio Tasso asking if we can take the existing code base modify it and rerelease under ECL.

Email to Claudio bounced. Hopefully Fabio will respond...

Got the following response from Fabio:

Dear Amit,

thank you for your interest on our XPointer library. Claudio Tasso
has gone forward to a professional job in computer science, and I am
keeping track of further projects and developments based on his
master thesis.

You are of course very welcome to use and update the XPointer
library. At the University of Bologna we usually employ GPL, or BSD,
or Mozilla as our Open Source licences. I have never checked ECL, but
I can do have a look at it, if it is important. If you could accept
BSD or Mozilla, that would speed up the process considerably.

Thank you very much

Fabio Vitali

I have responded with acceptance of BSD and have asked if he will update the site or we go ahead and do it.

I have pinged Fabio again asking for an authorization email to grab and change copyright on code to either BSD or Apache (potential here is to donate code to ASF). Hopefully we will get a response.

Got this response from Fabio:

Dear Amit,

sorry for the time it took to answer. You took me in between holidays
(I have a flight tomorrow at 7:00, and am writing at 2:00 AM just
after arriving from visiting family), so this partly explains my late
answers. Sorry anyway.

Yes, please grab the source code and change it to BSD yourself.
Please send back the source code once modified, I would like to keep
it in my place, too. I will of course credit your contributions.
Please also keep me updated on the state of the XPointer source code
AND of your project, I am really interested in it.

Thank you very much

Fabio

I think this gives us what we need to start work on the Xpointer library. I would have preferred Apache, but will not complain.
