Clarification on assumption of bandwidth between PLoS One server and browser

Description

We need clarification on what type of bandwidth can we assume between the PLoS One server and the browser for the October release. This is a careful balancing act between providing rich user experience and assumption of bandwidth to the client side. Second is we also need clarification on processing power assumptions on the client side.

Bandwidth Requirements

Due to the amount of data that PLoS ONE will be required to transmit to the client workstation, the client workstation will have to be connected to a high-bandwidth connection of typical individual DSL speeds (512 Kbps downstream, 128 Kps upstream) or more.

I think we need to be a little careful about what clients/platforms we officially support for the October release. By officially support, I mean we do a suite of testing on each of the platforms and fix bugs for those specific combinations. We don't have a lot of time to go chasing down bugs or testing the app on all these browsers and OS combinations, so I believe it may be prudent to slim things down a bit based on current usage statistics on the PLoS websites. We can make a best effort at fixing really bad errors that people discover on non-supported platforms, but we should focus on the top few browser/OS combinations at the start. Many of the current Web 2.0 sites started out with only IE/Firefox on Windows support at the beginning.
