Description

PLoS Marketing has requested some type of management for ads on the various online PLoS journals. While it is tempting to say yes based on the initial set of features, it might become a long term problem if new features are requested in this area. A better solution could be to partner with companies that have both technology and channel solution for this. I have asked Steve B. if this is worth pursuing. He will discuss internally and get back to us.

Response from Steve Borostyan:

Based on my understanding it seems there is no real issue with the ad banner management piece since this is just the background software that manages the ads and provides stats. The issue would be on the content side, and we would definitely want to maintain control over the content given branding/philosophical considerations of the types of ads we would allow on the site. I agree that it would seem more efficient to use a "plug-in" banner management system rather than build one ourselves; Liz has forwarded an open-source sample that we could consider.

Pointer from Liz:

  1. ad banner management - traffic stats (click thrus, hits) organization, rich media formats etc. very nice client info.some programs can handle 3rd party ad servers http://www.phpadsnew.com/two/
  2. third party ad servers - place a program on a users system, and then while browsing, serve ads from their servers http://advisor.aol.com/adspecs/addlThirdPartyAppServers.shtml#addynamix but then we don't get control from what I can tell.

So the resolution here is that PLoS One (and other PLoS specific apps) will provide only real estate for display of ads and the actual ad management will be done through an external service/software.
