will the virtual journal context be determined by hostname alone, or is there something else we'll need to add to the URL to distinguish plosone and ploshubs contexts?

the virtual journal context is determined by rules in the config file

source:/head/plosone/webapp/src/main/resources/org/plos/configuration/defaults.xml#L48

the config file comes pre-configured to match the host clinicaltrials.* for CT.

yes, hostname alone is enough, yes you can do more/other/diff rules.
