Topaz Objectives for Phase I

  1. Deliver the October 1st functionality requirements (Topaz 0.5) so that PLoS One can be launched.
  2. Create a logical and viable technology roadmap to Topaz 1.0 and beyond (to fix problems in 0.5, deliver the post-October features for PLoS One, and to better leverage emerging technolgies and trends)
  3. Foster the open source community for Topaz (need partners, leading institutions, and developer community support to create a healthy and vibrant ecosystem)

Topaz 0.5 Requirements

Must support:

  • DOI/Handle Server (also want flexibity to add other persistence namespaces)
  • OAI Harvesters
  • ADA/accessibility
  • Multilingual/International (at least for input fields)
  • Full-text search
  • RSS/Atom feeds
  • Threaded discussions
  • Annotations (granularity TBD.)
  • User accounts/personalization (granularity TBD.)
  • My PLoS "Lite" (TBD)
  • Usage statistics
  • Support at least Microsoft and Firefox browsers

Nice to support:

  • Versatile object repository
  • RDF/XML
  • Related items search/semantic search
  • Tagging
  • Backlinks/CrossReg/BackTrack
  • Full blown My PLoS

Will not support:

  • Federation Services
  • Work flow
